Providing ways for people to access safe water for washing, let alone drinking and cooking is a priority. Many rely on local streams, which often disappear during the dry season making water access very limited. The burden of seeking water mostly falls to women and young girls, presenting a danger to their well-being.
The burden of seeking water mostly falls to women and young girls, presenting a danger to their well-being. In this context, the Diocesan Development Office partnered with Anglican Aid (Diocese of Sydney, Australia) in a water well digging project in three communities: Kasharunga, Burungula, and Rulanda.
In addition to drilling new wells the Diocese has initiated rain water harvesting projects - "Tanks for Rain Water". Church buildings in Bukoba, Buhaya and Rwanganilo now have been provided with such tanks for rain water harvest.
Some Churches have more than one such tanks depending on the needs of the community around them.
In Bukoba Parish, Rev. Can. Elisha Bililiza joyfully acknowledges the support of the Anglican Aid Australia in providing three tanks of 10,000Lit capacity each.
According to Canon Bililiza, the system has saved the Parish Tzs 80,000/- in monthly water bill costs. Some parishes have also been able to sell water to their community, raising income for their parish.
Such a rain water harvest project could be copied and used by almost every parish in the Diocese.
