 Life in northwestern Tanzania presents many challenges. Most of the population lives in rural communities where poverty and limited access to essential services affect almost every aspect of life. Healthcare facilities are often distant or inadequately equipped, contributing to high maternal and infant mortality and the continuing prevalence of diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Schools frequently lack sufficient resources, trained teachers and basic infrastructure. Agriculture provides the principal livelihood for many families, but unpredictable weather, declining soil fertility and limited access to modern farming methods contribute to food insecurity and low household incomes.

The Diocese of Lweru ministers at the heart of these communities. Through evangelism, preaching, prayer, healing ministry, Christian formation and practical projects, the diocese seeks to bring the transforming hope of Jesus Christ to the whole person and the whole community.

Bishop Godfrey writes:

“This is Lweru—our home, our mission field and the place God has entrusted to us. Our region currently has the lowest household income in Tanzania. For many of our people, poverty alleviation is not simply about improving their quality of life; it is an existential challenge.

“Our first calling is to proclaim Jesus Christ and bring people into the life and hope of His Kingdom. But the Gospel also compels us to respond to hunger, sickness, limited education and the lack of economic opportunity. In Lweru, preaching, prayer, healing and practical service belong together. We want to see people saved, lives restored, churches strengthened and communities empowered.”
